About
Researchers from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid have developed a Physically Unclonable Function (PUF)–based circuit designed to be embedded within integrated circuits to verify their authenticity and detect counterfeiting or tampering. The technology operates by sending pattern signals and measuring the unique response or “fingerprint” generated by each chip due to minimal manufacturing variations, which is then compared with previously stored reference fingerprints.
The solution is based on a delay-type design and is highly robust against predictive attacks, improving the reliability of hardware-level authentication. It can be implemented using the same combinational digital technology already present in the integrated circuit, enabling straightforward integration without major design changes. The architecture includes two pulse (“glitch”) generators, supports a larger number of challenge–response pairs, and operates at higher frequencies, enhancing security strength and identification capability.
This technology provides a hardware-rooted method for ensuring component authenticity and supply-chain integrity, which is particularly relevant for sectors such as defense, space, automotive, and IoT where trusted electronics are critical.
Collaboration sought:
Collaboration is sought through investment agreements and commercial agreements with technical assistance with companies focused on security-oriented electronic applications, aiming to further develop the technology, validate it in real products, and integrate the PUF-based identification solution into partners’ device portfolios.
