About
The Vascular Pattern Biometric Identification System developed by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid enables immediate recognition of individuals through wrist vascular biometrics. The system uses infrared imaging to perform identification without physical contact, improving both hygiene and operational security.
Images are captured using infrared LED illumination and a compact USB camera, then enhanced to better capture vascular radiation patterns. The processed images are analyzed using artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms that identify, contrast, and highlight vein structures in real time. This approach enables precise visualization and reliable recognition based on unique vascular patterns.
The solution captures high-resolution images and supports real-time processing, which increases accuracy in applications such as patient identification, assistance in blood draws or injections, emergency response, and home healthcare. The device is designed to be portable and can be easily integrated with mobile devices through USB, and it can also operate on low-cost mini-computing platforms, enabling versatile deployment across multiple environments.
Innovative aspects include the use of the wrist as the biometric acquisition area, which is highly resistant to spoofing, contactless operation, optimized infrared imaging with compact hardware, and portability suitable for field or point-of-care use.
Collaboration sought:
Technical and commercial collaboration is sought with companies, healthcare technology providers, and security solution developers interested in further validating, integrating, and deploying the wrist-based vascular biometric system in identification, medical assistance, and secure access applications.
