About

Researchers from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, within the Infrared Laboratory (LIR), have developed multi- and hyperspectral infrared (IR) analysis techniques for passive and safe threat detection. The approach is based on emitter-free sensing, enabling the detection of potential threats without active radiation while maintaining a low false-alarm rate.

The technology focuses on the development of dedicated sensors and spectral processing methods for scenario classification. This allows optimized differentiation between real threats and background elements, decoys, or spurious emission sources. By improving discrimination capabilities, the system significantly reduces false positives and increases operational reliability in sensitive environments.

A key innovative aspect is its modularity, which enables the configuration of detection models and sensors tailored to specific threat types. The system can characterize potential threats based on their spectral signatures and their contrast with the surrounding environment. This spectral characterization enhances detection accuracy while maintaining safe, passive operation. The resulting solution is suitable for applications in protection, defense, and industrial control scenarios where reliable threat identification is critical.

Collaboration sought:
Manufacturing Agreements, Licensing Agreements, or Commercialization Agreements with technical support are sought with companies or R&D institutions interested in further developing, producing, and bringing to market multi- and hyperspectral passive IR threat detection systems, particularly organizations involved in IR sensor manufacturing or operating in protection, defense, or industrial control sectors.
