Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU) is a public higher education institution founded in 1944, located in Chernivtsi in western Ukraine. BSMU comprises 6 faculties and 48 academic departments of basic and clinical sciences, an Institute of Postgraduate Education for continuing professional development, and its own Professional (Vocational) College, Simulation Center, Educational-scientific Laboratory, Educational-Scientific Institute of Postgraduate Education. The university employs more than 1,000 staff and educates around 6,500 students in Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical Psychology, Dentistry, and Rehabilitation. Clinical training and research are supported through a network of 32 affiliated healthcare facilities across the Chernivtsi region, giving direct access to patients, clinical data and hospital infrastructure. RESEARCH PROFILE BSMU combines fundamental biomedical research, clinical medicine, applied health technology and social-sciences-and-humanities research. Its principal fields of expertise include: clinical medicine: oncology and oncological surgery, cardiology, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, family medicine, etc.; fundamental sciences: pathophysiology, pathomorphology, immunohistochemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, human anatomy and physiology; microbiology and infectious diseases, including the human microbiome; biomedical optics and diagnostics: an established school of Mueller-matrix polarimetry and polarisation-interference imaging of biological tissue, with applications in early and differential diagnosis; digital health, medical data analysis and AI-supported diagnostic tools; psychology and mental health: medical and clinical psychology, psychosocial support, trauma and resilience, mental health of displaced and war-affected populations; social sciences and humanities: citizenship and democracy education, civic participation, lifelong and transformative learning, inclusion of vulnerable groups (internally displaced persons, persons with disabilities), and post-conflict recovery of communities; public health, rehabilitation, palliative care and quality-of-life research; pharmaceutical sciences and medicinal chemistry. CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL CAPACITY BSMU works through the clinical bases of regional hospitals and specialised centres, giving access to a defined patient population in a European region under-represented in existing research cohorts. The University operates an active Bioethics Committee and has experience contributing to international multicentre clinical trials as a recruiting and investigating site. This makes BSMU a suitable clinical partner for patient recruitment, biosample and data collection, and the real-world validation of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. EXPERIENCE IN EU AND INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS BSMU already participates in Horizon Europe consortia, so the reporting, ethics and data-management practices required for EU-funded collaboration are established. The University takes part in ClimAir (Climate change and air contamination: Artificial Intelligence applied on the correlation between air pollutants and non-communicable respiratory diseases in Europe, GA 101156799) and RESTORY (Recovering Past Stories for the Future, GA 101132781) HE projects. BSMU is also active in Erasmus+, including student and staff mobility and cooperation projects with European partner universities: SimS (Simulation medicine and Scenario-based learning for emergency care, Erasmus+ KA2 СВНЕ, GA 101082077 - coordinator), D-CREDO (Digital Health Technologies-augmented Clinical Reasoning Education, Erasmus+ 220-HED), HIVE (HEI Innovation for Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship, EIT Health), etc. WHAT WE OFFER PARTNERS a committed, reliable Ukrainian partner institution with a track record of continuity; a clinical recruitment site with an active ethics committee and defined patient populations; fundamental, translational and social-sciences research capacity across biomedical, psychological and humanities fields; imaging, diagnostic and data assets suitable for AI and technology development; a platform for research capacity building, education, training and knowledge transfer. ROLE SOUGHT BSMU is open to be a coordinator or to join consortia as a partner or beneficiary, and to hosting clinical, diagnostic, psychological, educational, training and capacity-building work packages.
