Data sovereignty infrastructure and co-design with fishing communities for OCEAN-03 consortia
Oceanographer & Managing Director at Benthos gGmbH
Berlin, Germany
About
What we offer to OCEAN-03 consortia
Benthos brings a production-ready data sovereignty stack designed for direct use by coastal communities and the organisations supporting them. The infrastructure allows small-scale fishers and their representative bodies to participate in co-management with their data under their control, auditable per record and revocable at any time.
Specific contributions to a consortium:
1. Work-package lead or co-lead on data sovereignty, consent management and FAIR-governed data export to research partners
2. Production-ready conversational stack on WhatsApp, SMS and other low-bandwidth channels with RAG retrieval over verified public knowledge
3. Schema-level implementation of CARE Principles, FPIC and the Nagoya Protocol applied to fisher-generated data
4. Co-design protocols and field methodology developed with small-scale fishing communities
Background
Benthos gGmbH is a German non-profit registered in Berlin since 2026, with a team working across Berlin and the Brazilian coast. Our work combines marine science, data engineering and field practice. The stack is in active deploymentwith a small-scale fishing community in Arraial do Cabo, Brazil.
