About

What we do
Benthos builds digital infrastructure with data sovereignty at the centre for coastal communities, NGOs and research institutes working on mangroves, marine protected areas and small-scale fisheries. Our conversational stack runs on WhatsApp, SMS and other low-bandwidth channels using RAG retrieval over verified public knowledge.

Our approach
We operationalise international standards in software at the schema level: CARE Principles, FPIC, the Nagoya Protocol and Governed FAIR data export. Consent is scoped, revocable and auditable per record.

Our team
Oceanographers, data engineers and field researchers working across Berlin and the Brazilian coast, with shared experience of the territories our tools serve. Registered as a gemeinnützige GmbH in Berlin since 2026.

How we contribute as a partner
Benthos brings a production-ready sovereignty stack for European coastal communities and inland waters, auditable consent and data governance, and co-design experience with small-scale fishing communities. Available as work-package lead on data sovereignty, ethical AI infrastructure and community co-design.
