Virtual Empowerment: strengthening self-reliance through 6DoF VR

Changefied’s mission is to strengthen the self-reliance, confidence and social participation of neurodivergent people.

Virtual Empowerment is our modular 6DoF VR learning platform. It enables people to safely practise everyday situations that may be complex, stressful or difficult to repeat in the real world. VR is not the goal itself. It provides a safe and realistic learning environment where users can act, make decisions, learn from mistakes and repeat situations at their own pace.

Unlike passive 360-degree experiences, users actively move and interact within the virtual environment. The skills practised in VR can then be translated to real-life situations with support from a teacher, trainer or care professional.

The first proven module is Virtual Public Transport. It helps neurodivergent young people and others who need additional support practise the skills required to travel by public transport. Virtual Public Transport is implemented by schools, care organisations, public authorities and mobility partners in the Netherlands.

Virtual Public Transport forms the foundation of the broader Virtual Empowerment platform. The modular technology and learning approach can be extended to other areas of self-reliance such as independent living, shopping, work and internships, social interaction, digital skills and financial independence.

Changefied can contribute:

• an existing interactive 6DoF platform and modular engine;

• expertise in neuro-inclusive and accessible design;

• practical implementation experience in education, care and mobility;

• access to professional users and real-world implementation settings;

• relevant use cases for research, testing and validation;

• experience collaborating with public authorities and mobility partners.

We are looking for European research, technology and implementation partners who share our ambition to make immersive technology contribute to greater self-reliance and inclusion.

Potential collaboration areas include educational and behavioural research, impact measurement, accessibility, interoperability, localisation, new learning modules and Horizon Europe projects.
