Biosasun

Biosasun is a Spanish agri-food company based in Dicastillo, Navarra, founded in 2001. It specializes in the production of organic and functional foods, with a strong focus on sustainability, health, and technological innovation. Its flagship product is extra virgin olive oil enriched with polyphenols—natural antioxidants with proven health benefits.

Biosasun cultivates 28 hectares of native Arróniz olive trees using environmentally respectful agricultural methods. The company integrates circular economy principles into its processes by transforming by-products from the olive oil industry and other agro-waste into new, value-added products. Its offerings include gourmet olive oils, fermented beverages like kefir and kombucha, and other functional foods developed in collaboration with partners such as the Allotarra Association and Lurederra Technology Center.

Recognized with the 2024 Alimenta Navarra Award for Innovation, Biosasun has actively participated in several cutting-edge R&D projects:

Recent and Current Research Projects

• PROMETEA (2022–2024)
  Led by Biosasun and funded by the Government of Navarra, PROMETEA developed solutions to reduce complications from pressure ulcers in immobilized patients. The project involved UPNA, CNTA, DomusVi, Lurederra, and others. It focused on ozonated oils, melatonin-enriched drinks, fermented functional foods, and antiseptic nanoparticles for textiles and surfaces.

• IGUZKITZA (2024–2026)
  This ongoing project addresses olive production challenges due to climate change, such as solar stress and water scarcity. It explores the reuse of waste like paper sludge and wastewater, solar panel installations for shading and power generation, and automation in irrigation. Partners include Allotarra, Essity, Tecnan, IDAB-CSIC, CENER, Conservas Iturri, and Lurederra. Funded by the Government of Navarra and ERDF.

• BIOFOOD
  A strategic R&D project coordinated by Biosasun to develop health-promoting foods using microbial fermentation. It focuses on probiotic and postbiotic compounds derived from both gut and external fermentative bioprocesses. Collaborators include Brotalia, Lev2050, Nucaps, the University of Navarra, and CNTA.

• BINAFIE
  Develops an ecological, long-lasting bio-nanophytosanitary product with broad-spectrum efficacy for olive farming. It combines three active ingredients approved in organic agriculture. Partners include A&B Laboratorios, Guserbiot, and Lurederra.

• DERMANANO
  Aims to create a natural nanotechnology-based cosmetic for atopic dermatitis. Developed with Lurederra, this project was co-financed by the ERDF Operational Programme of Navarre (2014–2020).

• OLIVOGEN
  Focuses on developing new products to enhance male fertility and assisted reproduction techniques. Coordinated by Biokibank, with Biosasun as a participating partner.

• SUPREME
  A salutogenic approach for early diagnosis and treatment of metabolic syndrome and co-morbidities. Develops active compounds and ingredients for personalized nutrition. Partners include Domusvi, Ameztoi, Patia, Keralty Health, and Tecnalia. Funded by the Basque Government and ERDF.

• Olive Polyphenol Drying & Efficiency Project
  This project improves polyphenol concentration and drying technologies in olive processing, aiming for energy-efficient, high-quality outputs. Co-financed by the ERDF.

• Commercialise Project (CDTI)
  Biosasun was selected by Spain’s CDTI for this European pilot to help SMEs boost their innovation capacity and bring R&D results to market faster via expert mentoring.
