Healing Fungi and Olive Power: A Natural Approach to COPD and Conservation

Claudia Vairo

Coordinator of R&D&I and International Commercialization at Biosasun

Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain

About

This project focuses on the conservation, cultivation, and functional application of two medicinal mushroom species, in combination with olive-derived polyphenols. The first species, Tiger Milk Mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerus), known for its anti-inflammatory and respiratory health benefits, will be introduced and adapted for greenhouse cultivation in Spain, where it remains largely unknown. The second species, Witch’s Cauldron (Sarcosoma globosum), traditionally used in Nordic medicine and currently endangered, shows promising potential for sustainable cultivation in the Lokiz Forest in Navarra. The project integrates advanced cultivation techniques with bioactive olive compounds—particularly high-polyphenol olive oil and extracts—to develop innovative health-promoting formulations such as capsules, syrups, and aerosols, aimed primarily at supporting respiratory health, including conditions like COPD. The initiative combines biodiversity preservation with the development of novel functional products rooted in natural bioactive synergy.
