RESILOKIZ: Forest Fire Prevention, Truffle Agroforestry and Biomass Valorisation in Lokiz

Claudia Vairo

Coordinator of R&D&I and International Commercialization at Biosasun

Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain

About

The forests of Lokiz (Navarra, Spain) are under increasing wildfire risk, threatening not only biodiversity but also the water supply of Tierra Estella, as storms tend to avoid the area once forests are burned. This project aims to prevent such ecological and hydrological disasters by sustainably clearing undergrowth, dead wood, and foliage, and transforming this biomass into high-value pellets using low-emission, electric-powered machinery—such as those currently used in Finland. To enable this, the project will establish a bio-refinery to convert organic waste into pellets and explore additional valorisation routes like biogas or green hydrogen. Moreover, leveraging the truffle-friendly soil of the region, the initiative will promote fire-resistant forest regeneration by truffle-inoculating native trees (particularly oaks), planting new ones, and researching the encapsulation of truffle spores to enhance viability and symbiotic success. This integrated approach combines wildfire prevention, circular bioeconomy, renewable energy, and high-value agroforestry.
