Advanced Simulation & Modeling for Heat Pumps and Thermal Systems
About
The ISTENER (Thermal and Energy Systems Engineering) research group at Universitat Jaume I (UJI) provides advanced numerical modeling and simulation capabilities for next-generation thermal energy systems. Complementing our experimental laboratory, our computational expertise allows CETPartnership projects to predict system performance, optimize designs, and accelerate the development of zero-emission heating and cooling technologies.
Our simulation capabilities include:
-
Thermodynamic Cycle Simulation: Detailed modeling of high-temperature heat pumps (up to 160 °C), ultra-low temperature (ULT) refrigeration, transcritical cycles, reverse Brayton cycles, and Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC).
-
Refrigerant & Mixture Analysis: Evaluation of thermodynamic properties and cycle performance for pure working fluids and zeotropic mixtures, including the latest low-GWP alternatives and natural refrigerants.
-
Custom Computational Modeling: We utilize a robust software stack including Python, Matlab, Aspen HYSYS, REFPROP, and CoolProp to build customized models, ranging from component-level evaluations to full-system simulations. We also have experience developing custom research simulators such as HEATPACK.
-
System Optimization: Integrating energetic and exergetic criteria to validate the viability of industrial heat recovery, ejector subcooling loops, and thermal energy storage integration.
We are seeking to join consortiums that require rigorous theoretical validation, digital twin development, or thermodynamic cycle optimization prior to physical prototyping.
