My organisation

The Department of Port Management and Shipping (PMS) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a newly established academic unit within the School of Economics and Political Science, operating since the 2019–2020 academic year. It was created to address the modern needs of the maritime and port industry, offering a contemporary curriculum that reflects current developments in global shipping, port operations, and transport logistics. The Department combines rigorous academic training with practical orientation, supported by faculty expertise and active student engagement. Its programs emphasize both foundational and applied research in shipping and port management, fostering an environment that promotes innovation, critical thinking, and industry relevance. Research activity is a core pillar of the Department, with initiatives and projects that contribute to the evolving maritime sector. Academic staff and students collaborate to produce impactful research outputs, widely accessible to the broader community. The Department also participates in the ERASMUS+ program and is a member of the European CIVIS network, encouraging mobility and international collaboration among students, academics, and researchers.

About me

Dr. Michael Tsatsaronis is an Assistant Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in Financial Risk Management, Maritime Economics, and ESG & Sustainability. He holds a PhD in Financial Risk Management in Shipping from the University of the Aegean and brings over 15 years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His expertise spans quantitative finance, econometric modeling, shipping market analysis, green finance, and ESG reporting frameworks, with strong proficiency in data analytics and machine learning applications. He has served as Visiting Professor at Shanghai Maritime University, the University of West Attica, and the University of the Aegean, while also teaching at the Merchant Marine Academy of Chios. Dr. Tsatsaronis is Vice President of the Inter-municipal Port Fund of Chios and Scientific Coordinator of the NKUA e-Learning program “Green Finance and Sustainable Growth in Maritime Business,” and he serves as Financial Researcher in the Green Fund “AdaptPorts” project on port climate adaptation. An award-winning scholar (Best Paper Award, IAME 2023), he has published extensively in leading Q1 journals including Maritime Policy & Management, Maritime Economics & Logistics, and Research in Transportation Economics, with research focusing on risk modeling, ESG performance, corporate governance, and volatility dynamics in shipping and energy markets.
