The Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre (Hull York Medical School, University of Hull) is an interdisciplinary centre dedicated to improving the quality of care and quality of life for people living with advanced illness and their families. The Centre conducts innovative health services and applied research across palliative and end-of-life care, with particular strengths in health inequalities, symptom management, serious illness care, and culturally responsive care. Our work uses a wide range of methods, including large-scale linked healthcare data, qualitative and ethnographic research, participatory approaches, and the development and evaluation of complex interventions. We work closely with NHS partners, community organisations, patients, families and policymakers to generate research that informs clinical practice, service design and health policy. The Centre provides a collaborative environment for doctoral training and international research partnerships, supporting interdisciplinary research that improves equity, access, and quality of care for people living with life-limiting illness.

About me

I am Professor of Palliative Care and Health Services Research at Hull York Medical School (UK). My research focuses on inequalities in palliative and end-of-life care, particularly for people from minority ethnic communities and those with complex mental health conditions. I use mixed methods approaches, combining large-scale linked healthcare data with qualitative interviews, ethnography, and participatory co-design.

My work examines disparities in symptom assessment and management (especially pain), access to palliative and supportive care, and the cultural and social influences shaping care experiences. I am particularly interested in interdisciplinary collaborations that bridge clinical practice, social science, and policy, and in developing and evaluating complex interventions that improve equity, quality, and experience of care for people living with life-limiting illness.
