About
CABIMER is a pioneering multidisciplinary biomedical research centre in Seville, Spain, bringing together basic and applied research to translate science into direct improvements in citizens’ health and wellbeing. In 2019, CABIMER was ranked among the top 100 biomedical research centres worldwide.
Prof. Inés Pineda Torra (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7349-2208)) is a biochemist with 30 years of international experience in the transcriptional regulation of lipid metabolism by lipid-activated transcription factors. She joined CABIMER in 2022 after developing her entire scientific career abroad. She is an Honorary Professor in Cardiometabolic Medicine at University College London and a Distinguished Principal Investigator at CABIMER and leads the Department of Integrative Pathophysiology and Therapies. Following her BSc studies in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Complutense University of Madrid, Prof. Pineda Torra worked on lipid metabolism at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, with an ERASMUS Fellowship. She then investigated gene regulation by nuclear receptors during her PhD at the Pasteur Institute in France. After holding postdoctoral positions in the United States, where she worked on receptor regulation and signal transduction, she joined UCL as a Lecturer in 2008 and was promoted to Full Professor in 2019. She has authored more than 60 publications in high-impact journals and maintains international collaborations in cardiovascular research (UK, EU, USA) and nuclear receptor signalling (EU, USA).
Her research group investigates how lipids regulate metabolic and immune pathways involved in atherosclerosis and ischaemic cardiovascular disease. The group collaborates with clinical teams and analyses transcriptomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic data from human cohorts and animal models. Current research focuses on women’s health and the cardiometabolic impact of menopause.

Description of the project/projects:
Projects can be tailored to the candidate’s expertise and specific research interests. Overall, our studies focus on pathways involved in cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of mortality among women worldwide. We focus on women because they remain understudied and are significantly underrepresented in clinical trials for cardiometabolic drugs.
Innate and adaptive immune cells, such as monocytes, CD4+ T cells/Tregs, and CD8+ T cells, play key roles in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, the main pathology underlying ischaemic CVD.
Building on our previous studies exploring lipid metabolism in human immune cells and our work on cardiovascular risk in women with autoimmune diseases, we are now investigating cardiovascular risk in women from the general population at different stages of life. Our aim is to uncover the mechanisms underlying the cardiometabolic changes experienced after menopause.
1. Project 1 Objective: Impact of menopause on cardiovascular risk factors
2. Project 2 Objective: Impact of endocrine disruptors and environmental stressors on cardiovascular risk: sex differences
