About

Munster Technological University (MTU) is a leading Irish technological university with approx. 18,000 students across six campuses in Cork and Kerry. MTU’s research addresses regional, national and global challenges through five pillars: Life Sciences & Wellbeing; Physical & Engineering Sciences; ICT; Business, Entrepreneurship & Social Sciences; and the Creative & Performing Arts, Humanities & Media.

Research centres such as NIMBUS (CPS/IoT), CAPPA (photonics), IMaR (mechatronics/robotics), Halpin (maritime), CABR – Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (formerly Shannon ABC, biotech), CTC (resource efficiency) and others anchor collaboration with >130 companies. MTU operates one of Ireland’s largest incubation centres (65 startups; ~250 employees; >2,500 jobs created over 10 years; ~€65m annual turnover). The university’s annual research expenditure reached €32.7m in 2024, with strong performance in Horizon Europe (>€8.6m to date) and significant direct industry funding (€1.99m, AKTS 2023). MTU is committed to open science, research integrity and inclusion, evidenced by the HR Excellence in Research (HRS4R) award and Athena Swan Bronze. As a member of the INGENIUM European University Alliance since 2023, MTU expands mobility, joint programmes and joint research, amplifying impact. A capital programme of ~€180m is modernising laboratories, studios and testbeds, enhancing capability across photonics, CPS/IoT, biotechnology, maritime, sustainability and creative practice.
