About
The Municipality of Etterbeek (Brussels-Capital Region – Belgium) carries out a wide range of missions in the service of its residents, including civil registration, urban planning, public cleanliness, mobility, housing and infrastructure management. It also implements security and prevention actions in cooperation with the local police and other stakeholders. The municipality is responsible for education through its municipal schools, supports associative and cultural life, and offers leisure activities. Its population presents a diverse socio-economic profile, combining households from working-class, middle-class and upper-income backgrounds. In cooperation with the Public Centre for Social Welfare (CPAS), the municipality supports residents facing difficulties and promotes social and professional integration.
With 50% foreign nationals, Etterbeek is one of the most cosmopolitan municipalities in the world. Due to the proximity of the European institutions, a significant share of the population comes from other EU countries (36%, a rapidly growing figure). In total, more than 150 nationalities live side by side, with highly diverse profiles ranging from international civil servants to asylum seekers. This reality results in a plurality of cultures, languages, backgrounds and aspirations, representing both a major challenge and a significant opportunity for the municipality.
The municipality is particularly innovative and active in areas aligned with the New European Bauhaus priorities, such as quality of life and public spaces, affordable housing, social inclusion, regenerative approaches for the built environments, green transformation, democratic engagement and social cohesion, as well as innovative funding.
