About
European small and medium-sized cities face converging challenges: aging cultural infrastructures, declining social cohesion, youth emigration, and pressure to meet climate and circularity targets with limited institutional capacity. Many renovation efforts remain either technically-driven (energy upgrade without social meaning) or socially-driven (community engagement without durable spatial or economic models). The project addresses this fragmentation by developing and validating integrated architectural, energy, governance, and cultural regeneration models rooted in New European Bauhaus (NEB) values of beauty, sustainability, and togetherness. Our project responds to this call by developing, testing, and scaling an integrated model for regenerating public buildings and open civic spaces as inclusive, beautiful, and future-resilient commons. It combines reversible modular construction, demand-flexible energy systems, and participatory co-governance to strengthen belonging, reduce environmental impact, and create spaces that communities can adapt, share, and sustain over time.
