The project aligns with continental science and innovation frameworks, notably the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA-2034), which prioritizes innovation-led growth, sustainable development, and ecosystem resilience (African Union, 2025). It complements ongoing regional bioeconomy efforts under programmes like BioInnovate Africa, which supports research translation into practical bio-based products and sustainable enterprises that address climate change and biodiversity challenges while creating employment (icipe, 2025). By piloting integrated models, documenting evidence, and scaling successful innovations with clear governance and financing mechanisms, the project supports national STI-bioeconomy intersections and strengthens capacities to translate science and innovation into practical socio-economic outcomes.
The initiative supports the **UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)**—notably SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships)—by promoting resilient livelihoods, bio-based value chains, and strategic multi-stakeholder cooperation. It also reinforces commitments in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Ethiopia and Uganda by advancing climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable land and forest management, and ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation and mitigation (e.g., Ethiopia’s updated NDC emphasises agriculture, land use, and forestry) (Farmafrica, 2025). Through its integrated approach, the project offers a scalable and evidence-based pathway for transformational bioeconomy-driven development across both countries and the East African region.
Outcomes
Outcome 1: Strengthened Bioeconomy Governance
The capacity and coordination of policymakers and key institutions for integrated bioeconomy governance are strengthened, with sustainable value chain criteria effectively applied.
Outcome 2: Demonstrated Integrated Bioeconomy Models
Integrated bioeconomy models are tested, validated, and documented, demonstrating clear and measurable benefits for climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and socio-economic resilience.
Outcome 3: Scaled and Replicated Innovations
Successful bioeconomy models emerging from pilot projects are scaled up and replicated across relevant sectors and landscapes.
Outcome 4: Policy and Financing Integration
Lessons learned and evidence generated from pilot initiatives are systematically integrated into policies, financing instruments, and strategic planning processes.
Outputs
Output 1: Institutional Capacity Strengthening
Capacity-building workshops, coordination platforms, and governance tools for policymakers and key institutions are developed and delivered, with sustainable value chain criteria applied.
Output 2: Implementation of Bioeconomy Pilot Projects
Integrated bioeconomy pilot projects are implemented, generating evidence and lessons that are documented, shared, and disseminated.
Output 3: Policy and Investment Mechanisms Tested
Policy incentives, investment strategies, and innovative financing mechanisms are piloted, tested, and evaluated.
Output 4: Scalable and Replicable Business Models Developed
Scalable and replicable bioeconomy business models and strategies are developed, validated, and formally endorsed.
Output 5: Market Development and Policy Uptake Strengthened
Policy and financing recommendations are finalized, while market access and demand for bio-based products are strengthened.
