About
UTOI z.s. contributes to projects exploring how existing urban trees can be transformed into measurable climate assets through enhanced management that significantly increases their cooling capacity and carbon sequestration, financed through blended finance combining public grants, private loans, and ecosystem service credits.
Core Concept
Cities host millions of mature trees that provide essential cooling and carbon services, yet lack sustainable financing to optimize them. We propose credit-based blended finance where: public grants cover initial setup; private loans (NPBs, EIB-intermediated) finance infrastructure; and revenue from carbon and ecosystem credits helps repay loans. Real-time monitoring provides transparent performance data for investors, transforming tree management from cost center into partially bankable climate adaptation asset.
Foundation
Our work builds on arboronomy – a discipline focused on managing individual urban trees to optimize ecosystem services (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18236896), protected by two patents: EP3809823B1 (granted): precision irrigation technology for mature urban trees; WO2024183837A2 (pending, EU/USA phases): methodology for quantifying, managing and financing climate adaptation through carbon and ecosystem credits.
Preliminary Results
Field trials with Mendel University Brno demonstrated up to 5× carbon sequestration increases through precision irrigation (dendrochronology), plus measurable cooling enhancement and drought resilience. These are preliminary findings requiring validation across diverse contexts – CLIMA-07 would enable multi-site validation across climate zones and species.
Recognition
Presented at: ISA (keynote 2023, 2024); EFUF (2025); Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Banking Coalition (2024); Smart City Expo Barcelona (2024); Co-keynote with Prof. William Moomaw (IPCC lead author, 2023).
What We Bring
Methodology and IP: Patent-backed irrigation technology (EP3809823B1 - granted) and methodology framework (WO2024183837A2 - pending) for carbon/ecosystem service quantification and financing, both royalty-free for consortium; arboronomy foundation; preliminary field data; monitoring expertise (dendrometry, sap flow, soil moisture, GIS).
Finance expertise: Revenue modeling; blended finance design; bankability indicators; investor transparency protocols.
Policy awareness: EU frameworks understanding (CRCF, Taxonomy, EIB/NPB); finance sector experience (Rockefeller Banking Coalition); certification alignment support.
Networks: Scientific credibility (ISA, EFUF); finance connections; cross-sectoral communication.
What We Seek
Project coordinator with Horizon Europe CSA experience; cities/regions ready to pilot credit-based financing; financial institutions (NPBs with EIB access or blended finance consultants); research partners for multi-site validation and MRV protocols; policy/legal experts for EU framework alignment.
Open Development
This is a promising concept requiring collaborative refinement: field results need validation across contexts; credit methodologies need testing against EU frameworks; financial models need real-world NPB piloting; monitoring protocols need standardization. CLIMA-07 provides ideal framework for collaborative development and validation.
CLIMA-07 Alignment
Blended finance demonstration (grants + NPB loans + credits); bankability improvement (real-time monitoring + quantified performance); nature-based solutions (existing trees = immediate deployment); scalability (patent-backed methodology); policy relevance (EU Taxonomy and CRCF alignment).
Readiness
TRL 7-8; pilot sites available; proven monitoring infrastructure; international visibility; clear IP framework for collaboration.
Background
UTOI z.s. bridges science and practice in urban forestry and climate adaptation. President Ing. Martin Tušer, founder of arboronomy, is internationally recognized expert (ISA keynote speaker, Rockefeller Foundation Banking Coalition participant). We operate alongside Ledasco s.r.o. (commercial manufacturer).
Project Stage: Piloting readiness – proven technology seeking multi-site validation
Cooperation Sought: Specialized partner contributing: credit-based finance methodology; precision tree management technology; performance monitoring; EU certification readiness.
