Artificial Reefs as Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Regression Research

CEO and Researcher at Natural Art Reef (NAR)

Tarragona, Spain

About

Natural Art Reef (NAR) offers its expertise in the ecological and geomorphological design of artificial reefs to support the development of submerged coastal protection structures that mitigate wave energy while enhancing marine biodiversity.

Our experience in designing large-scale artificial reefs provides transferable know-how applicable to submerged physical barriers aimed at reducing coastal regression. This approach bridges traditional coastal engineering with nature-based principles, ensuring that protective structures are compatible with marine ecosystems and contribute to habitat creation rather than degradation.

NAR’s design methodology integrates wave exposure, seabed characteristics, material selection and habitat complexity to develop reef configurations capable of dissipating wave energy while promoting benthic and fish communities. This dual-function perspective responds to the growing need for coastal protection solutions that combine physical effectiveness with ecological value, particularly in Mediterranean contexts affected by chronic coastal erosion.

NAR seeks to collaborate within European consortia alongside coastal engineers, research institutions and public authorities, contributing ecological design expertise to projects focused on climate adaptation, coastal resilience and biodiversity-positive coastal defence solutions.
