HORIZON-CL5-2027-04-Two-Stage-D2-07: Novel approaches towards next-generation battery concepts, leveraging the enabling role of innovative advanced materials

About

Bridging laboratory scale material research and industrial cell, module and pack production, SIRO is well placed to support the HORIZON-CL5-2027-04-Two-Stage-D2-07 call by shortening the distance betweennovel advanced materials and industrially credible battery concepts. Materials produced by research partners can be processed into functional coin and pouch cells in SIRO's cell development laboratory, giving a first realistic assessment of processability, electrode formulation, formation behaviour and ageing. Supporting this, characterisation capability covering surface morphology and imaging, particle sizing, BET, impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and long term cycling under controlled climate conditions allows degradation and failure mechanisms of new chemistries to be studied on cells built with serial representative methods. Just as importantly, SIRO can define the industrial boundary conditions that next generation concepts must satisfy. Based on its experience in automotive and stationary battery systems, realistic KPI sets covering pack level energy and power density, fast charge capability, operating temperature window, safety envelope, cost and manufacturability can be provided so that material development is steered towards real applications from the outset. Novel chemistries also demand novel control strategies, and this is where SIRO's core competence in BMS hardware architecture and embedded software becomes decisive. State of charge, state of health and safety algorithms can be adapted to the different voltage profiles, hysteresis and ageing behaviour of next generation cells, and combined with thermal management and structural design to build representative demonstrator modules. Work packages of interest cover cell prototyping and validation of advanced materials, definition of application requirements and KPIs, BMS and control strategy adaptation for new chemistries, module level demonstration, and scalability and industrialisation assessment.
