About
As a manufacturer of cells, modules and complete battery systems with recycling and second life defined among its strategic goals, SIRO is well positioned to support the HORIZON-CL5-2027-02-D2-05 call from the industrial end of the value chain, where the adaptability and efficiency of recycling processes ultimately have to be proven. Well characterised and fully traceable feedstock, including production scrap, out of specification cells and end of life modules, can be supplied together with the complete bill of materials, cell chemistry and joining technology data that recyclers normally have to reverse engineer. Building on the teardown, service and root cause analysis capability of its Battery Excellence Center, SIRO can contribute hands on dismantling expertise and quantify the time, energy and safety effort required to open real automotive and stationary pack architectures. This provides a direct input to improving the flexibility of existing pretreatment lines. On the validation side, recovered active materials can be processed into electrodes and assembled into coin and pouch cells below 1 Ah in SIRO's cell development laboratory, then evaluated through material characterisation (surface morphology and imaging, particle sizing, BET), electrochemical analysis (formation, impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry) and cycling and ageing tests, so that recyclate quality is benchmarked at cell level rather than only at chemical purity level. Feeding results back into design is equally central. SIRO can translate recycling findings into design for disassembly and design for recycling requirements for future module and pack architectures, and can contribute its traceable production and quality management system to the data and traceability obligations arising from the Battery Regulation and the digital battery passport. Work packages of interest cover feedstock supply and characterisation, dismantling and pretreatment demonstration, validation of recycled materials in cells, design for recycling guidelines, and industrial exploitation.
