Efficient HVDC-LCC Control Solution for Offshore Wind Grid Integration

UC3M Knowledge Transfer Office at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

Madrid, Madrid, Spain

About

Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid has developed a system that stabilizes voltage and frequency in isolated grids—such as offshore wind farms—enabling their integration into the main grid through HVDC-LCC (Line-Commutated Converter) links. This technology offers a simpler, more robust and cost-effective alternative to HVDC-VSC systems.

The system enables decoupled voltage and frequency control using vector control and capacitor banks, generating a stable voltage waveform even during grid connection to rectifier stations. It improves efficiency, reduces converter losses, supports higher DC voltages and allows longer-distance power transmission.

Collaboration sought: License agreements or technical cooperation with companies in offshore wind, smart grids or HVDC systems to advance development and integration into commercial solutions.
