Power-over-Fiber Systems for Hazardous and High-Risk Environments

About
Researchers at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid have developed a Power-over-Fiber system that enables simultaneous data transmission and remote power supply through a single optical fiber. This eliminates the need for electrical cables, making it ideal for environments with strong magnetic fields, high explosion risk, lightning exposure, or where weight reduction is critical (e.g. wind turbines, aerospace, nuclear plants).
The system provides safe, EMI-free power delivery over long distances, avoids short circuits and sparks, and can integrate low-power or pulsed operation and energy harvesting techniques. Its multiplexing capability allows multiple signals or power channels through one fiber, reducing infrastructure complexity and costs.
Collaboration sought: Technical cooperation or funding agreements with companies interested in developing prototypes and implementing the technology in sectors such as renewable energy, aerospace, offshore platforms, defense or smart infrastructure.
