PERIOCARE PET: A NEXT-GENERATION BIOTECHNOLOGICAL FORMULATION BASED ON ANTARCTIC BACTERIAL METABOLITES FOR PERIODONTAL DISEASE IN COMPANION ANIMALS
R&D Director at Pewman innovation SpA
Santiago, Chile
About
Periodontal disease affects an estimated 90% of companion animals (dogs and cats), driven by a microbial imbalance in the subgingival sulcus sustained by keystone pathobionts such as Porphyromonas spp. Current standard-of-care relies on mechanical scaling under general anesthesia (costly, stressful for animals, and requiring specialized infrastructure) or broad-spectrum antimicrobials that disrupt the whole oral microbiome and contribute to antimicrobial resistance. The global pet dental health market was valued at US$8.3 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$12.7 billion by 2030 (7.6% CAGR), reflecting a clear unmet need for a targeted, non-disruptive solution.
In this scenario Pewman Innovation is developing PERIOCARE PET, a topical veterinary formulation based on a highly specific bioactive compound produced by a proprietary bacterial strain isolated from the extreme Antarctic environment. The active ingredient acts by selectively suppresses keystone periodontal pathogen while sparing beneficial commensal bacteria. This positions PERIOCARE PET as a microbiome-sparing, non-antibiotic alternative for long-term periodontal management in companion animals.
Differentiated Value Proposition
-
Selective antimicrobial activity against target pathogens without collateral impact on the commensal oral microbiota.
-
Demonstrated high biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity in relevant in vitro models, supporting a strong safety profile.
-
Novel bioactive origin and application supported by a defensible IP strategy (patent applications and trade secrets), in a space free of current blocking patents.
The selective and safety profile of the active fraction has been validated through in vitro efficacy and cytotoxicity assays under controlled conditions, establishing a clear proof of concept and therapeutic window.
Partnership Sought
Pewman Innovation is a Chile-based biotechnology company specialized in bioprospecting extremophile microorganisms, with an established B2B licensing model and existing engagement with international industry players in the pet care and animal health sectors. Through the EUREKA Network we are seeking a strategic European partner (ideally an established player in veterinary/pet care, animal health, or specialty formulation) to co-develop the final formulation, support industrial scale-up, and lead commercial distribution across Europe, under a licensing agreement or Joint Development Agreement.
