Short-Term Wave and Vessel Motion Prediction

Researcher at NORCE Research AS

Haugesund, Norway

About

NORCE Coastal and Ocean Systems develops methods for short-term prediction of incoming waves and associated vessel motions. By combining marine radar, real-time observations, signal processing, numerical methods and advanced prediction algorithms, we aim to describe the local wave field and forecast conditions from seconds to minutes ahead.

This capability can provide valuable decision support for time-critical maritime and offshore operations where conventional weather forecasts do not offer sufficient spatial or temporal resolution. Relevant applications include offshore wind installation and maintenance, vessel transfers, gangway operations, lifting operations, autonomous vessels and other activities that depend on short operational weather windows.

We can contribute to collaborative projects with radar-data processing, wave-field reconstruction, short-term forecasting algorithms, vessel-response modelling, sensor and system integration, field testing and validation. We are particularly interested in partnerships with universities, technology providers, vessel operators, offshore companies and developers of autonomous or remotely operated maritime systems.

Our objective is to transform real-time wave observations into actionable information that improves safety, operational efficiency and utilisation of available weather windows.
