Safe Circular Solutions for Li-ion Battery Storage and Transport

About

The Faculty of Chemistry and the Faculty of Automotive and Construction Machinery Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology are looking for universities, research institutes and industrial companies from Norway and Iceland to establish a consortium under the POLNORIS programme.

The rapid growth of electric mobility, renewable energy systems and autonomous technologies has led to an increasing demand for safe storage, transportation and end-of-life management of lithium-ion batteries. Thermal runaway, fire hazards and increasingly stringent transport regulations require innovative engineering solutions that improve safety while supporting the circular economy.

The proposed project aims to develop advanced passive technologies for the storage, transportation and temporary handling of lithium-ion batteries throughout their entire life cycle, including damaged, defective and end-of-life batteries.

The project will focus on the development of integrated safety systems combining advanced materials, thermal management and engineering solutions that reduce the risk of fire propagation, explosion and environmental contamination during transport and storage.

Potential research activities include:

  • passive fire protection systems,

  • thermal insulation and heat dissipation materials,

  • advanced compartment and cassette design,

  • inert atmosphere solutions,

  • fire suppression materials,

  • thermal runaway mitigation,

  • materials resistant to extreme temperatures,

  • safety testing and validation,

  • numerical modelling and risk assessment,

  • pilot-scale demonstration and industrial implementation.

The consortium brings together expertise in chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering and physicochemical characterisation. We offer strong laboratory facilities and experience in advanced materials, corrosion, thermophysical properties, energy-related technologies and industrial R&D.

We are particularly interested in partners working in:

  • battery technologies,

  • electric mobility,

  • transport and logistics,

  • fire safety engineering,

  • advanced materials,

  • thermal management,

  • battery recycling,

  • maritime and offshore industries,

  • pilot-scale testing and industrial implementation.

Academic institutions, technology centres and industrial companies are invited to jointly develop innovative and commercially relevant solutions supporting the safe and sustainable battery value chain.
