Environmental challenges and growing social inequality — within and between cities, between regions and parts of the country, and between different parts of the world — place demands on society: we must adapt and transform.

NIBR researches this transformation; the connections between place, governance and sustainability. Our research is particularly strong on the relationships between the governance and planning of society on the one hand, and social, economic and environmental sustainability on the other.

We shed light on how the development and maintenance of equitable services across the entire country are both challenged and safeguarded through the division of responsibilities between the levels of government.

We examine which forms of governance are best suited to meeting complex societal challenges that no single actor can solve alone. This concerns, for example, how to maintain and develop democratic participation, reduce social inequality, ensure the efficient use of public resources, and effectively address environmental challenges
