About
The project addresses the growing environmental challenge of textile waste and the need for sustainable materials by developing advanced biodegradable biocomposites based on recycled cotton fibres and biodegradable polymer matrices.
The concept builds on previous research in fibre–matrix interface engineering and polymer modification, aiming to enhance compatibility between hydrophilic natural fibres and biodegradable polymers. In this approach, waste cotton fibres derived from post-consumer or post-industrial textile streams will be used as reinforcement, replacing conventional natural fibres.
The project focuses on developing new material solutions with improved mechanical performance, durability and controlled biodegradability. This will be achieved through targeted modification of the polymer matrix and optimisation of fibre–matrix interactions. The resulting materials are expected to combine high performance with reduced environmental impact and circular economy potential.
A key aspect of the project is the valorisation of textile waste streams, enabling their transformation into high-value materials. The project will also include evaluation of environmental performance, including life cycle assessment and biodegradability, as well as validation of market potential and scalability.
The project is planned as a collaborative R&D initiative involving academic and industrial partners, aiming to demonstrate feasibility and application potential of the developed biocomposites in selected sectors.
The consortium is looking for partners with complementary expertise to support development, validation and future application of the biocomposites:
· Textile recycling companies
· Experience in collection, processing and supply of waste cotton textile materials
· Research institutions / specialised organisations in LCA and biodegradation
· Expertise in environmental impact assessment, life cycle analysis and biodegradation testing of materials
· Industrial end-users
· Companies interested in testing developed materials, validating their performance in real applications and supporting market-oriented activities
· Partners should be interested in collaboration within a research and development project focused on scaling, testing and validation of innovative material solutions.
