Reviving Europe’s First Steam Engine: Public History, Education & Heritage Reconstruction
About
This project, led by the civic association ALTHANDEL, focuses on the comprehensive reconstruction and public presentation of the first steam engine installed in continental Europe in 1722 at Althandel shaft in Nová Baňa, Slovakia. Originally built to pump water from a deep mining shaft, this engine represents a significant milestone in technological and industrial history.
Our goal is to combine historical research, mechanical reconstruction, and digital innovation to bring this forgotten engineering marvel back to life. The project involves:
-
Design and creation of accurate physical scale models based on historical documentation and engineering analysis
-
Development of virtual reality (VR) experiences that simulate the engine in operation within its historical mining context
-
Archival and scholarly research to document the historical, technical, and societal relevance of the engine
-
Educational and public outreach activities, including exhibitions, online content, and school programs
By blending tangible models with immersive digital tools, we aim to foster public engagement, increase awareness of early industrial heritage, and build a European network of experts and institutions working in the fields of heritage technology, engineering history, and digital culture.
We are actively seeking project partners, including museums, universities, NGOs, and creative studios, as well as funding opportunities under programs such as Horizon Europe, Creative Europe, and national heritage grants.
