Preserving local newspaper archives
Associate Director Research and Engagement at Coventry University
Coventry, United Kingdom
About
Analogue records are increasingly redundant for the digital local newspaper industry; additionally, the speed of the transformation and contraction of established titles means many of these records are disposed of without consideration of their cultural and heritage value. These records may include photographic collections, cuttings libraries and business records as well as the newspapers themselves
I am leading a project, Preserving the Local Newspaper Archive, funded by The National Archives in the UK to address this. The project will create a toolkit and network to support and amplify the impact of people - both professional and community-based – who are stepping into this area in an effort to salvage, catalogue and make accessible these records. Our partners include professional, community and industry based archives.
This project recognises the significant cultural and heritage value of local newspapers, which can literally document hundreds of years of history. They form a unique record of people and places, but this documentation is threatened by the disposal of this material. The commercial use of these collections is also under -recognised, which contributes to their precarity.
I would like to develop projects which assess and articulate the heritage value of local newspaper archives and which develop practical examples of how they can generate income.
I am based at Coventry University where we have a range of researchers working on cultural heritage, including its preservation, value and digital futures, and creative economies.
