Re-purpose, Re-use, Reconnect: A New Era for Astronomical Telescopes with EASST
Professor of Astronomy, President of EASST at European Astronomical Society of Small Telescopes (EASST.EU)

About
The European Astronomical Society of Small Telescopes (EASST.eu) coordinates a global network of telescopes that re-purposes and re-uses existing astronomical infrastructure to serve cutting-edge science, citizen science, and educational outreach. By extending the capabilities of small and medium-sized telescopes, the project bridges the gap between professional astronomy, industry needs (such as space debris monitoring and satellite tracking), and public engagement. This initiative empowers a diverse community—researchers, amateur astronomers, educators, and the general public—to explore the Universe and contribute to its understanding.
As part of our mission, we seek active involvement in the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EUSST) activities. We believe that re-purposing small telescopes for EUSST can significantly enhance Europe’s capacity for monitoring space debris, improving situational awareness, and safeguarding our space environment—while also inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
