Biopolymer screening for specific applications

Cooperation, Innovation, Transfer at INNOVENT e.V.

Jena, Germany

About

The screening and evaluation processes of biopolymers represent a central component of application-oriented research, particularly in the context of sustainable materials development. At INNOVENT, bio-based polymers are systematically investigated to assess their suitability for various applications. This screening process encompasses both the selection of suitable biogenic starting materials and their targeted modification and processing into functional material systems. The focus is on properties such as mechanical stability, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and chemical and physical resistance. These properties are analyzed and evaluated using comprehensive physicochemical and biological characterization methods. A key aspect of this work is adapting the material properties to specific application requirements, for example, through polymer modification, surface functionalization, or the integration of functional additives. In addition, application tests are conducted to investigate the behavior of the materials under realistic operating conditions. Based on these systematic investigations, INNOVENT prepares feasibility studies that serve as a basis for decisions regarding industrial implementation. These studies include literature reviews and concept development, as well as experimental validations to realistically assess the potential of new biopolymer solutions. The aim is to minimize risks early on and to efficiently transfer the material idea from concept to marketable application.
