Green Extraction & Biomass Valorisation Platform for Sustainable Food, Materials and Packaging

Project leader at Celabor

Chaineux, Belgium

About

Celabor is a Belgian research centre based in Wallonia dedicated to developing environmentally friendly extraction and valorisation processes for biomass. With strong expertise across food, packaging, materials, textile and environmental sectors, Celabor supports industrial partners in transforming bio-based resources into high-value, sustainable products.

Over the past eight years, Celabor has participated in 23 European projects (BBI-JU, CBE-JU, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe) and 4 Interreg projects, building a strong European network of industrial and academic partners. This has led to the creation of a unique Biomass Valorisation Platform equipped with cutting-edge technologies operating at both laboratory and pilot scale.

Our green extraction technologies include:

  • Sub-critical Water Extraction
  • Supercritical CO₂
  • Ultrasound-assisted extraction
  • Microwave-assisted processes
  • Pulsed Electric Fields

These are complemented by advanced downstream processing (DSP), analytical characterization, and biological activity assessment, all within an ATEX-approved pilot environment.

Our expertise is structured around two main departments:

Materials Department Development of sustainable materials through green chemical modification of bio-based building blocks such as cellulose, lignin, chitin, and keratin. Applications include packaging, textiles, construction and agriculture.

Food Department Food quality control and physico-chemical characterization using advanced analytical platforms, alongside the development of natural, plant-based, and prebiotic products using gentle, sustainable processes that preserve functionality and support clean-label innovation.

Celabor supports companies seeking to develop circular, bio-based and climate-friendly solutions, bridging research excellence and industrial implementation.
