The Department of Port Management and Shipping (PMS) at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a newly established academic unit within the School of Economics and Political Science, operating since the 2019–2020 academic year. It was created to address the modern needs of the maritime and port industry, offering a contemporary curriculum that reflects current developments in global shipping, port operations, and transport logistics. The Department combines rigorous academic training with practical orientation, supported by faculty expertise and active student engagement. Its programs emphasize both foundational and applied research in shipping and port management, fostering an environment that promotes innovation, critical thinking, and industry relevance. Research activity is a core pillar of the Department, with initiatives and projects that contribute to the evolving maritime sector. Academic staff and students collaborate to produce impactful research outputs, widely accessible to the broader community. The Department also participates in the ERASMUS+ program and is a member of the European CIVIS network, encouraging mobility and international collaboration among students, academics, and researchers.
Theoni Karlessi is an energy & environmental consultant and senior project manager with more than 15 years of extensive experience in sustainable development, energy policies and design of optimal strategies and solutions for the transformation of public, private and industrial building sector in line with sustainability goals and the principles of integrated energy design and circular economy.
Her expertise in the design, implementation and monitoring of energy efficiency best practice solutions, extend from building scale to city scale and projects of the urban fabric. Key activities include both scientific and technical advisory in numerous projects providing the strategic plan for qualitative and quantitative results and evaluation. The activities also address to indoor and outdoor spaces performance of energy, comfort and health aspects. Holding a M.Sc. in building environmental physics and a PhD at the field of innovative materials for urban structures, she is an expert in the development and testing of smart materials and techniques as a solution to fight urban heat island and climate change.
She has been actively involved in more than 20 EU funded projects related to deep renovation of buildings, urban planning, quality management for building performance and life cycle analysis, market transformation towards clean energy solutions, cost effective integration of RES in buildings.
Her experience and involvement expand also in the public, private, industrial sector and regional –municipal development with more than 15 real scale projects, setting the technical specifications for the energy and environmental upgrade of building and outdoor spaces, designing implementation and evaluation strategies, consulting on multiple sustainability scenarios and best practices. She is a member of the Bioclimatic Upgrade of Public Open Spaces Assessors Registry of the Center of Renewable Sources and Energy Efficiency CRES for the evaluation of bioclimatic criteria. She is a Certified Expert in Environmental Impact Assessments, Category 27.
