Intelligent Control Unit for Thermal Energy Storage – Model Predictive Control for Grid Flexibility

Sebastian Rigger

CEO & Co-Founder at Joulzen FlexCo

Wien, Austria

About

Joulzen develops an intelligent control unit that transforms decommissioned oil tanks into grid-responsive thermal energy storage systems. The control unit uses Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms to optimize energy flows between photovoltaic systems, heat pumps, and thermal storage in real-time. The system processes weather forecasts, electricity price signals, and household consumption patterns to minimize energy costs while maximizing self-consumption.

Circular Economy Integration: The control unit enables the upcycling of existing oil tank or container infrastructure instead of disposal. This approach avoids metal and plastic waste while repurposing tanks with capacities of up to 400 kWh thermal storage – 100x the capacity of conventional battery systems at a fraction of the cost.

Digitization Features:
- IoT connectivity via MQTT protocol for real-time monitoring
- Cloud-based data management with encrypted connections
- Remote access for system status, power consumption, and storage levels
- Over-the-air software updates
- Interface for Flexibility Aggregation to virtual power plant networks

Grid Flexibility Capability: The control unit is designed for second-precise power control, enabling participation in balancing energy markets. Multiple systems can be aggregated into a virtual power plant providing negative control reserve to transmission system operators. Current Status: Three operational pilot installations in Austria.
