DECONSTRUCTION + REUSE = NØWASTE
About
BIOCONSTRUCCIONES PREFABRICADAS BRIZNA S.L. presents the project "De-Build&Reuse" to Line 1 (Construction and Demolition Waste) of the RIVCircular – Cascade Funding call, with the aim of empirically demonstrating that an existing building can be selectively deconstructed —rather than demolished—, that its materials can be sorted, certified and reintroduced into a new construction process, and that this practice, combined with low-impact local natural materials —structural timber and merino sheep wool unsuitable for textile use— can significantly reduce both the environmental impact and the economic cost compared to conventional new-build construction.
Unlike a purely theoretical proposal, this project is grounded in the applicant's own verified scientific research: the thesis "Ciclo de Vida Material" (Mendoza Milara, 2013), which applied Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using SimaPro and the Eco-Indicator 99 method to a real case in the La Serena region (Extremadura), comparing a newly built house with a rehabilitated and extended house using reused deconstruction materials. The results of that research —a 63.42% reduction in Ecosystem Quality impact and a 35.9% reduction in economic cost— constitute the empirical foundation on which this proposal is built, now taking the concept a step further: not merely rehabilitating, but fully deconstructing a building and reconstructing it with an unprecedented combination of recovered materials and locally sourced natural materials.
The project will be carried out on a real, verifiable practical case: the house already studied in the aforementioned thesis, which allows the conclusions previously obtained through academic research to be field-validated with comparable empirical data.
