I am a Japanese Studies scholar who uses ethnographic approaches to examine the effects that severe demographic shifts are having on identity, community, and culture in rural regions. When I am not working, I enjoy cooking and my vinyl collection.
I am a Japanese Studies scholar who uses ethnographic approaches to examine the effects that severe demographic shifts are having on identity, community, and culture in rural regions.
Although I primarily use qualitative data and research methods, I also rely heavily on quantitative demographic data and perform some descriptive quantitative analysis.
I am fluent in Japanese and lived in Japan for 14 years. The ethnographic research methods I tend to use are participant observation and qualitative interviews. I also rely on text-based data to fill in the gaps.
My next challenge is to learn GIS! Software like QGIS or ArcGIS will be perfect for helping me make my data more VISUAL, and add a quantitaive layer of spatial analysis to my data.
When I am not working, I enjoy cooking and my vinyl collection. When I am not home, I like being out on the trail, wind, snow, sleet, or hail.
