I am an interdisciplinary scholar and a creative thinker. I use micro stories and specific objects to tackle big cultural questions. 'Trans' is a dynamic driver of my work, mobilising transdisciplinary and transcultural approaches.
My work has been foundational of transgender studies. I have led international projects on photography, ethics and atrocity, working with Amnesty International. I led a multi-site project taking a transcultural approach to the Ottoman Empire and have worked on transcultural exchanges between Jews and other groups (Muslims, Armenians, etc.) in sites including Singapore, Izmir, and Salonika.
I have a substantial publication record, including three single-authored monographs, three co-edited books, two co-edited journal special issues, and over fifty articles in referred journals or book collections. I have been the recipient of several awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship and the Hazel Rowley Prize for Biography.
My research (individual and collaborative) has been funded by the Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv, Arts and Humanities Research Council, Leverhulme, British Academy, Higher Education and Innovation Fund, British Council, among other funders. I have worked with museums, arts organizations, charities, archives, practice researchers, and educational institutions at different levels, in the application, and co-creation, of research findings.
My current research is focused on material culture and Jewish studies, especially as it relates to the Holocaust. I remain committed to transnational, transcultural, and intersectional approaches.
