Dr. Teresa Mata is an experienced researcher in environmental engineering & sustainability with over 25 years in the field. She has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto (2004), where she also worked at the US EPA through a Fulbright scholarship. She holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering (1995), MSc in Environmental Engineering (1999), & MBA from PBS (2007).
She is a Principal Researcher at INEGI’s Energy and Fire Unit, leading various research projects funded by national and European programs. Teresa has vast experience coordinating international initiatives, including her role as Director of University-Industry Relations at the MIT-Portugal Program and Director of University of Porto Innovation.
Teresa’s research covers Life Cycle Assessment, biofuels, microalgae biorefineries, indoor air quality & process design. She has over 130 publications (45 last 5 years), 75% in top journals. She co-edited 2 special issues, 1 book, and 1 conference proceedings. With an H-index of 37 and over 8,300 citations, she has also written 18 book chapters, 72 conference papers, 65 abstracts, and given 66 hours of invited lectures.
Teresa’s work has been widely recognized, including receiving the CNOIV Prize for her paper in J. Clean. Prod. and the FEUP Scientific Recognition Award. She is ranked among the top 2% of most influential researchers globally in Energy, Environmental Sciences, and Enabling & Strategic Technologies, according to Stanford University.
She has contributed to 35 R&D projects (13 last 5 years) and is currently leading the HETMOLION Horizon project. She supervised 3 postdocs, 5 PhD, & 45 MSc students. Her industry collaborations include companies like IMPETUS, COLEP, UNICER & SOGRAPE, resulting in many joint publications.
She collaborates with international institutions like NTNU, US EPA, and universities in Europe & America. She is also involved in networks such as Net4CleanAir COST Action, Batteries Europe, & European Biofuels Technology Platform.
