öbu – the Swiss Business Council for Sustainable Development – is the oldest network for sustainable business in Switzerland, founded in 1989. Together with its member companies, öbu promotes a future-fit Swiss economy by connecting people, businesses, ideas, and methods. The organization supports the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and focuses on circular economy, sustainable value chains, and climate & energy.
In 2021, öbu launched a new focus area: promoting circularity in the construction sector, particularly the reuse of building materials to reduce grey CO₂ emissions. This began with the “Re-Use of Steel Sections” (RUSS) project, which built a network of industry partners, supported pilot projects, and identified barriers to steel reuse. Building on the success of RUSS, öbu aims to expand the initiative to include a wider range of materials such as concrete blocks, wooden structures, and windows. The goal is to scale up circular supply chains across the construction sector, reduce emissions, conserve resources, and contribute to a more circular built environment in Switzerland.
