About
The Bratislava City Museum (MMB) is a well-established public cultural institution with strong institutional capacity and recognised expertise in the protection, research, interpretation, and international presentation of cultural heritage. It combines professional excellence with a forward-looking approach, positioning itself as an active actor in contemporary cultural and societal discourse. MMB is committed to achieving a broader mental and societal shift in how cultural heritage institutions engage with the public. Its vision is to become an open, inclusive, and respected institution that connects research, heritage preservation, and active public dialogue. It critically reflects both the past and present of the city, promotes multi-perspective narratives, human-centred approaches, and democratic values, and serves as an inspiring space for education, participation, and community life. MMB operates within a dense ecosystem of city authorities, cultural institutions, academic partners, tourism organisations, and civil society actors. In close cooperation with the City of Bratislava and the Bratislava Tourist Board, it contributes to shaping the city’s cultural offer through exhibitions, educational programmes, and initiatives supporting the active use of public space. This strong embeddedness enables MMB to act as an effective connector across sectors and governance levels. MMB integrates research, heritage management, museology, education, and public engagement within a single institutional framework. It has developed recognised expertise in working with archaeological heritage, historical narratives, and culturally sensitive sites, while effectively translating specialised knowledge into accessible content for diverse audiences. MMB has extensive experience in international cooperation. A key recent initiative is the cross-border project Turning Points: Museums for a Democratic Future (Interreg Slovakia–Austria), implemented in partnership with Volkskundemuseum Wien, where MMB acts as Lead Partner. The project focuses on strengthening democracy through museum and educational practices, combining research, exhibitions, and cross-border cooperation, and further reinforcing MMB’s capacity to lead large-scale international initiatives. Beyond heritage preservation, MMB actively addresses themes such as democracy, civic participation, and public dialogue. It works with diverse communities, including international residents, and develops inclusive approaches that foster dialogue, participation, and shared understanding. With its strong networking capacity, interdisciplinary expertise, and extensive experience in cross-border cooperation, the City Museum of Bratislava is a credible, reliable, and strategically relevant partner for international projects.
