Urban Resilience and Transformation: Inclusive Heritage and multi-perspective Narratives
Deputy Director / Head of the Project Department at Bratislava City Museum
Bratislava, Slovakia
About
Resilience is a key thematic pillar for the Bratislava City Museum (MMB), shaping both its research agenda and its approaches to interpretation and communication. MMB explores resilience as a multidimensional concept, addressing historical, cultural, social, and environmental challenges through interdisciplinary and participatory methods. By linking research with innovative forms of storytelling and public engagement, the museum aims to translate complex societal transformations into accessible, inclusive, and dialogue-oriented narratives. MMB is seeking partners interested in collaborative projects that strengthen democratic resilience, foster community engagement, and develop new approaches to interpreting urban heritage in a rapidly changing Europe.
The concept of resilience enables us to interpret the history (Bratislava) not only through narratives of trauma and victimhood, but also through strategies of survival, adaptation, and transformation. For the museum, this approach creates an opportunity to (i) present difficult historical periods (such as war, totalitarianism, and migration) without resorting to simplified narratives of victimhood or heroisation, (ii) reflect on contemporary societal challenges (e.g. environmental crisis, increasing polarisation, and declining trust in institutions), (iii) strengthen urban public discourse by highlighting micro-stories, civic engagement, and community-based strategies of resilience, (iv) position the museum as part of a resilient democracy, capable of providing historical context while fostering empathy and critical thinking.
