About

Art in Progress is an independent, non-profit cultural organisation founded in 2011 in Patras, Greece. We work across contemporary art, cultural production, education and international cooperation, with a particular interest in the relationship between culture, public space and everyday life.

We see culture as public infrastructure: something that contributes to a city's identity, creates opportunities for participation and leaves a lasting legacy. This approach guides our artistic projects, festivals, exhibitions and educational activities.

Over the years, Art in Progress has organised international contemporary art events, including the RE-culture festival, bringing together artists, different artistic practices and audiences. Our activities include exhibitions, public art interventions, workshops, educational programmes, guided tours and cultural exchanges.

Our best-known initiative is ArtWalk, the International Street Art Festival of Patras. Across ten editions, ArtWalk has created a permanent network of 78 large-scale murals throughout the city, with artists from around the world. Together, these works form an open-air museum of contemporary art, freely accessible to everyone, without tickets, opening hours or institutional barriers.

ArtWalk has received the EFFE Label for 2024–2025 and 2026–2027, recognising its place within the European festival community. Its work has also attracted considerable international media attention and digital visibility.

Beyond artistic production, we are interested in the people who live alongside the artworks. At Eptanison Square in Patras, three murals were developed with the active participation of the neighbourhood. Such experiences have strengthened our interest in how communities can contribute to shaping their shared spaces.

Art in Progress also participates in European cooperation through programmes and initiatives including Interreg, Erasmus+ and research and innovation projects. Our experience combines artistic direction and cultural production with education, international networking, communication and the practical coordination of complex projects.

We are particularly interested in working with universities, researchers, cultural institutions, architects and organisations concerned with the future of cities. We can contribute experience in large-scale public art, participatory artistic processes, educational activities, cultural interpretation and the communication of research through accessible artistic experiences.

We would welcome opportunities to explore the relationship between public art, cultural identity, social participation and people's experience of their neighbourhoods. We believe these questions deserve careful research, bringing artistic practice into dialogue with social sciences, urban studies and other disciplines.

Our ambition is to help create cities where contemporary culture is part of everyday life, where public space invites participation and where artistic work continues to have meaning long after a project has ended.
