About

Fired clay is one of the world's most overlooked climate problems. The industry produces over 1.1 billion tonnes CO₂e every year, comparable to the entire cement sector. Yet unlike cement, which has attracted billions in green investment, brick has been almost entirely ignored by the decarbonisation community. Without intervention, those emissions are set to grow by over 50% by 2050 as urbanisation accelerates. It represents one of the largest untapped decarbonisation opportunities in construction.

Composite Designers Ltd makes no-kiln biochar bricks and tiles that are a direct drop-in replacement for fired-clay products: same aesthetics, same installation process, same factory infrastructure. Anti-disruptive by design, they are carbon-negative, sequestering 1.2kg CO₂e/kg rather than emitting it. The technology fuses aerospace composite methods with foundry techniques and is patent pending.
