About
Bursa Metropolitan Municipality is the local authority of a major metropolitan city in the Marmara Region of Türkiye with approximately 3.2 million inhabitants across 17 districts and a surface area of 10,882 km². The city includes coastal districts along the Sea of Marmara as well as dense urban neighbourhoods, industrial zones, agricultural landscapes and natural environments such as Uludağ, offering diverse socio-spatial contexts for neighbourhood-level pilot actions.
The municipality operates through a broad institutional structure with more than 30 municipal departments covering urban planning, environment, transport, social services, climate action and innovation. This multi-sectoral structure enables integrated approaches to green transition, social inclusion and local well-being, in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus.
Bursa Metropolitan Municipality has experience in participatory local governance and neighbourhood-scale implementation, working with citizens, civil society organisations, universities and local stakeholders in co-design and consultation processes. Municipal services addressing social support, vulnerable groups, public health promotion and community well-being provide an operational basis for NEB-related activities.
The municipality has adopted strategic frameworks aligned with European climate and sustainability agendas, including the Bursa Green City Action Plan (GCAP) and the Bursa Sustainable Energy and Climate Adaptation Plan (BUSECAP) under the Covenant of Mayors initiative. In addition, urban regeneration and neighbourhood transformation projects offer real-life environments for testing inclusive and sustainable solutions.
With its large population, diverse neighbourhood structures and implementation capacity, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality can contribute to NEB Participation projects as a local authority partner, pilot city and living lab, supporting co-creation processes, citizen engagement, local implementation and policy integration for inclusive, sustainable and health-supportive neighbourhoods.
