Seeking NEB Consortium Partners: Aeroponic Vertical Farming Demo Site in Lisbon
General at Upfarming
Portugal
About
We bring hands-on experience designing, implementing, and activating aeroponic vertical farming systems across diverse urban contexts, like neighbourhoods, markets, hospitals, schools and prisons, turning underutilised spaces into productive, inclusive, and community-driven ecosystems.
Our demo proposal is a community aeroponic vertical farm on the rooftop of Arroios Market, a historic market building in Lisbon city centre. The structure is lightweight, modular, and reversible, with approximately 2,000 m² of aeroponic towers. The system reduces water consumption by up to 90% compared to conventional farming and is designed to be inclusive: accessible to children, elderly people, and those with reduced mobility. The rooftop would also serve as a social and cultural hub, bringing people together through food literacy workshops, school programmes, and solidarity food baskets. We are already launching a pilot project in two of the shops in the market.
We are open to joining consortia with alternative demo site proposals, bringing our implementation expertise, community networks and a replicable urban agriculture model to other contexts across Europe.
