Inclusive Waterfronts & Small River Restoration through nature-based solutions for urban resilience
Project Manager at HSL+

About
The initiative "Vinnytsia on the Water," specifically focusing on the "Alley 12.7" and the restoration of 64 Small Rivers, aims to transform neglected urban waterways into vibrant, inclusive, and climate-resilient public spaces. We approach small rivers as more than just hydrological objects, viewing them instead as a vital backbone for urban biodiversity, social cohesion, and post-war psychological recovery.
Our project concept centers on several key pillars. First, we implement Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) to restore the ecological health of the 64 small rivers, directly addressing urban heat island effects and flood management. Second, we are developing a unique framework for inclusive social infrastructure, including floating and waterfront hubs designed specifically for veteran rehabilitation and broad community engagement. Third, we promote circular and sustainable business models that foster meaningful interaction between nature, society, and business, encouraging local enterprises to contribute to long-term ecosystem maintenance. Finally, we prioritize participatory governance through our "Civic Waterfront Lab," which empowers citizens to actively participate in the co-design and co-management of their local public spaces.
We offer a unique pilot site in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, backed by strong municipal support and a methodology for small river restoration that is ready to be scaled across other European cities. Our team brings interdisciplinary expertise in project management, spanning architecture, ecology, and social sciences, alongside a deep-rooted connection with local communities, youth organizations, and NGOs.
We are looking for partners, including municipalities, research institutions, technology providers, and NGOs, who can bring experience in advanced water-cleaning and NbS technologies. We are also eager to collaborate with experts in green urbanism, sustainable architecture, social innovation, and inclusive design, as well as providers of digital tools for civic participation (Civic-Tech) to further enhance our participatory governance model.
