Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine (NIOM) in Łódź NIOM is a highly specialized scientific research unit dealing with the issues of occupational, public and environmental health. It was founded in 1954 as an independent scientific research institute under the supervision of the Minister of Health, and for almost 70 years it has been co-creating and developing occupational health care system through carrying out its scientific, therapeutic, experimental, implementation, training and publishing activities. In last decade the public and widely understood environmental health is the equal priority in undertaken scientific, educational and implementation activities. The main objective of NIOM is to ensure the best available practical systemic solutions that improve conditions of life and work. NIOM carries out a range of activities aimed at prevention or mitigation the risks of environmental diseases. Among the most important activities are developing of guidelines, legal regulations as well as strategies and polices in the field of environmental health. NIOM focuses on needs of populations exposed to environmental threats regards exposure assessment, health effects evaluation and effective prophylaxis implementation mind to ensure their good health and well-being. Due to the high standard and quality management in research it is one of the most important scientific research units in the country. Laboratories of NIOM have accreditation of the Polish Centre for Accreditation and they also meet the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice – GMP as well as of Good Laboratory Practice – GLP. For many years NIOM has cooperated with institutions in the country and outside it, as well as with numerous international organizations, among others: World Health Organization – WHO, International Labour Organization – ILO and International Commission on Occupational Health – ICOH. NIOM as national public institute is not performing regular economic activities on the market.
