About
Galway Hospice is a leading voluntary provider of specialist palliative care, serving the people of Galway city, county, and the surrounding islands for almost four decades. Established in 1986 by a group of local clinicians who recognised a critical absence of hospice services in the region, the organisation has become a leading provider of high‑quality, person‑centred palliative and supportive care in the west of Ireland.
The hospice delivers comprehensive inpatient and day services through its 18‑bed inpatient unit and day care facility in Renmore, Galway. This site also hosts the multidisciplinary community palliative care team, which provides specialist, home‑based care 365 days a year to patients across diverse urban, rural, and island communities. In 2021, Galway Hospice expanded its impact by assuming operational and clinical governance of Mayo Hospice in Castlebar—a 14‑bed inpatient and day service facility developed through public philanthropy and supported operationally by the HSE. This dual‑site model enables Galway Hospice to deliver a unified regional approach to specialist palliative care across two counties.
Across both locations, patients have access to an extensive range of supports including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, aromatherapy, art therapy, pastoral care, social work, chiropody, and bereavement services. Care is delivered entirely free of charge and is grounded in the hospice’s core commitment to respecting each individual as a unique person with physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs.
Galway Hospice places equal emphasis on supporting families and carers, delivering tailored interventions throughout illness and into bereavement. Its multidisciplinary workforce brings wide expertise in complex symptom management, end‑of‑life care, and psychosocial support.
